Hayoun Chun is a Partner in Lee & Ko's Intellectual Property Practice Group and Health Care Practice Group. Prior to joining Lee & Ko in 2014, he worked as a Patent Attorney at patent specialty firms, FirstLaw P.C. and Koreana Patent Firm from 2004. In Lee & Ko, he has counseled and represented various global tech companies and pharmaceutical companies in relation to their IP issues, regulation and compliance issues, and litigations.

Mr. Chun has significant experience in all areas of IP law, including patents, trademarks and design practice and litigation, patent prosecutions before the Korean Intellectual Property Office, invalidations, cancellations and scope confirmation trials before the Intellectual Property Tribunal and the Patent Court, as well as infringement actions before the judicial courts. His expertise also extends to IP management, IP licensing and distribution agreements, unfair competition, and trade secret protection.

Recently, he also advised clients on legal issues related to pharmaceutics and medical devices, including negotiation for collaboration agreement for COVID-19 vaccine development, a dispute on an IP license agreement for anti-inflammatory drug, and a patent analysis relating to dialysis filters.

He has been successfully representing and counseling clients in cross-border cases based on his understanding of IP systems in various jurisdictions. He involved multiple US patent infringement cases filed against Korean companies and IP disputes in Korea involving non-Korean companies. Notable cases include representation of a German automobile component manufacturer in a Korean patent infringement litigation, a U.S. based company in a Korean trademark dispute, a Korean communication device manufacturer in a U.S. patent infringement lawsuit, a U.S. based AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection) equipment manufacturer in a patent infringement dispute in Korea, and a Korean solar cell manufacturer in a U.S. ITC and district court proceeding and infringement lawsuits in Germany and Australia.

He also has experienced in copyright disputes related to a computer software licensing agreement, and participated in a number of IP licensing and financing deals. In recent years, he has been involved in disputes relating to mobile and computer games, which is one of fastest growing business in Korea as well as in the world. He also counseled a major Korean battery corporation in IP licensing in the context of joint venture with multinational company.

Mr. Chun holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University, and a J.D. from Korea University School of Law School, and an LL.M from Columbia Law School.

He is admitted to the Korean Bar and to the Korean Patent Bar. He is also admitted to the New York State Bar.
